Glossary of Search Engine Terms
Below are the terms you will see most often when you are using search engines. Of course, there are a lot more terms you will encounter, but these terms will cover the basics for this site and most of the search engines.
Click thru Rate
The percentage of times a link is clicked on divided by the number of times the link shows up. For example: If 100 people look at a Web page and 5 of them click on a particular link on that page, then the click thru rate for that link would be 5%.
Inbound Links or Incoming Links
(The terms mean the same thing.)
Links on other Web pages that point to your Web page are called an inbound link or incoming links. These are important because they help raise your link popularity. These incoming links are a lot more valuable if they use your keyword or keyword phrase in the link.
KEI
KEI stands for "Keyword Effectiveness Index" and is a measure of how valuable a keyword or keyword phrase is. It is a combination of how many times the word or phrase is used in a search and how many other Web pages contain that word or phrase. WordTracker originated the term and calculate it for you. For example if a word was searched for a lot and almost no one was using that word, it would have a high KEI and would be a good word for you to optimize for and use on your Web page (assuming of course, the word describes the subject of your Web page.)
Keyword Density
The number of times a keyword was used on a page divided by the total number of words on the page. It is expressed as a percentage. If ther were 1,000 words on a page and you used a keyword 100 times, the keyword density would be 10%. Words like: "and, the a, etc. are not counted in the total word count. Keyword Density is also called Keyword Frequency.
Keyword phrase
A keyword phrase is a group of two or more words that include your keyword or keywords. It is always a good idea to optimise your page for keyword phrases instead of just a keyword for two reasons. First almost no one searches for just a single word now. (You wouldn't search for "hotels" you would search for "New York City Hotels." And the second reason to use keyword phrases is that the keyword is included within your keyword phrase. You get it for free.
Keyword Placement
Keyword Placement refers to where your keywords are placed on your Web page. You need your keywords in the first part of the page and in the Title tag, description tag, etc.
Keyword Proximity
Keyword proximity refers to how close together your keywords are comparied to how close together they were in the search phrase. For example: If someone searched for this string of words, "peanut butter and jelly" and if your page had the following sentence, "Peanut butter is also good when it is used with jelly." then your page might be found because it contains the words that were searched for but it wouldn't be as likely to be found as it would if the words on your Web page were exactly as used in the search for phrase. Therefore, always try to use your keyword phrases exactly as they are likely to be used in a search phrase.
Link Authority
The term, link authoripty, refers to how important the incoming links are that are pointing to your site. Links from sites that have a high PageRank are important. Links from sites that have a low PageRank are of little value.
Link Farms
Link farms are Web sites that have hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of outgoing links. These links are useless and sometimes can be even worse that usless. Google and other search engines can ban you if you are involved in link farms.
Link Partners
If a site has information about the same subject as your site and they link to your site and you link to their site, this increases the PageRank of both pages. When you do this, the two of you are called "link partners." Getting link partners is a good way to increase your PageRank. As you can see, "link partners" are different from "link farms."
Link Popularity
The term, link popularity, refers to how many incoming links a site has. Each incoming link is a vote for your page. The number of links as well as the PageRank or importance of the links are both important to increase your pageRank.
Link Request
This is how you get other sites to link to your site. Many times a polite email asking for a link to your site will get results. If you add a link to their site and mention this in the email, this will help get you the link. Make sure the site is about the same subject as your page and also make sure it has a PageRank of 3 or more. A PageRank of 4 or 5 is even better.
Links Page
This is a page on your Web site with all (or most of) your outgoing links. A better name for this page would be "Resources." Having all of your outgoing links on one links page is easy for you, but you would like for the people linking to your site to have the link to your page on one of their important pages that has a high PageRank rather than on a links page. A page with a high PageRank and one that is on the same subject as your page is the best type of link you can get.
Optimization
This is the process of making your web page rank high on the search engines. This is also called Search Engine Optimization or SEO.
PageRank
This is the way Google measures the importance of a page. PageRank goes from 0 to 10. It is NOT a straight line scale. It is a log scale with a base of about 4. For example, it is much easier to go from a PageRank of 3 to a PageRank of 4 than it is to go from a PageRank of 6 to 7.
